Hey mate,
This week’s been a tough one, with the whole family getting crook with some bug which hit us all for six. Interrupted sleep every night starts to rack up the sleep debt, real quick.
Practical

Since my recent ‘forced-work-schedule-decluttering’ (getting the sack 🤣) last week, I’ve been working on a more minimalist path forward. One of the things that has been most helpful, was sitting down with Ruweka, to create a plan of attack. This resulted in a checklist of tasks that needed to get done each week that we’d review together on a weekly basis.
I tend to be all ‘up in the clouds’ ‘visionary’ ‘can see the end result clearly’, struggle with the details, whereas she is all “tell me what you’re going to do this week”. While it’s sometimes hard to see each other's point of view, this combo of completely different ways in which our minds work, can actually work well together. Gino Wickman wrote a book about this called Rocket Fuel, talking mainly about business, though I think it can work well in a relationship when you’re talking about building something together.
Having this schedule in place helps both of us to have some peace of mind that we’re slowly chipping away and making progress each week. It makes it easier to practically implement the saying; ‘enjoy the journey, not just the destination’. It’s also great to have this as some accountability, to ensure it all gets done.
Peaceful
I’ve stopped giving af what people think. Mostly.
The thing I’ve stopped caring about is what people think when I start sharing my journey more online. I would love to point towards a resource that was like yep, that's the thing that finally set me free - but it’s actually been years of me working on this. There have been a few key things that have helped though. Bit deep, but who gives af right? They are:
- Not being able to keep to myself what I’m learning and doing anymore as it may be useful to someone else. Because if it helps even one other person that’s having the same struggles, then it’s worth it for me.
- It’s lonely not being able to talk about what you’re working on. I’m hoping people will find what I’m doing so I can connect with some ‘others’, as Paul Millerd calls them.
- I want my kid/s to be able to see what it looks like that their old man had a crack at doing what he really wanted to do. I hope it makes them proud and inspires them to do the same.
- I was an unfulfilled sad sack working a job just to get a fortnightly payslip. I am far more useful to my family if I’m going after my dream (particularly when it starts to make money 😅).
- Done is better than perfect, just get it out there.
- The first of anything is going to be shit. While no-ones reading in the beginning anyway, may as well get some reps in that’ll make it better over time.
- Being inspired by other creator dads on a similar journey like Tommy Jackett, Ray Corcoran, Matt K Head and (dad to be) Matt D’Avella.
- YOLO and all that.
I say ‘mostly’, because I’m not a robot and there is always a bit of approval seeking going on with what I put out there, but I mainly do it just for myself, my family and hopefully others in a similar boat - anyone else that sticks around for the journey, awesome.
What I’m reading:
A happy pocket full of money - David Cameron Gikandi
This book is hectic. It’s real woo woo but I love that stuff, ha. I’m only in the first third or so of the book but so far it’s going mainly into quantum physics and that we’re just made up of a whole bunch of atoms that move around like humans and there’s lots of talk about energy 😂.
Eventually I think he’s going to show how it all ties in with happiness and having more than enough money in your life.
The main takeaway I have at the moment is the importance of being present, living in the now. I’ve seen this so much before though I’ve always struggled to implement it. I’m looking forward to seeing his suggestions to make it actionable.
It was recommended on the the You Are the Brand Podcast, with Mike Kim:
Chillers of the week - Little family from Tassie renovated a bendy bus to live in, now it’s an AirBnB in their backyard 👌:
Face of the week - ‘as they landed’ (that's the rule, I can’t move things to make a face) some remaining corn and black rice (not mouse 💩) in the strainer from dinner prep the other night.
Dad Joke of the week (DJOTW):
Why did the golfer bring two pairs of pants? In case he got a hole in one.
